Labor Day Travel Ideas – Snag a Lisbon Weekend [Video]

This Labor Day Weekend why not think out of the box, spur of the moment. Think value. How about a spa and wellness excursion to Portugal? For a real adventure this holiday, or any other, it’s a wonder more Americans don’t take advantage of exchange rates and wondrous places that could use the business. And luxury comes at very reasonable prices in Portugal. If you’ve never seen Portugal, some say you have not lived.

We wanted to shine a spotlight on Portugal for several reasons today. First off, a flight from New York City to Lisbon on Friday, returning on Monday is only about $1200 bucks. Leave JFK, head up to Montreal, switch airlines, and in a total of 8 hours, plus or minus, land in sunny Lisbon (We looked vie CheapTickets dot com). Checking out interesting places to stay, capable of neck and body massage to eliminate stress at the end of the flight.

The Tiara Park Atlantic Lisboa is a stunning hotel, and one where 2 can stay Friday to Monday for only €443 ($643 today – we used Yahoo! Travel meta search to Hotels dot com). If you want to splurge a bit at this luxury hotel situated right in Parque Eduardo VII, in the center of Lisbon, then add a couple hundred bucks and get your own private driver, tickets to some of the area’s best historic attractions. Well, you look at the hotel’s site. Another thing, your dollar buys a lot these days in Lisbon, just saying.

The point here is, instead of spending 8 hours in holiday traffic to get to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, headed to Atlantic City, or up into the mountains there in New York, for a couple of grand you can be experiencing Lisbon – in style – in about the same amount of time. Is that worth the trouble? It’s your Labor Day. More ideas tomorrow. For now, think of yourself in beautiful Portugal, then go there this Labor Day.

  • Lisbon is one of the best European destinations for Americans. Not only is it the closest European capital to the United States, but it's also a wonderful introduction to Europe without the constant cold and rainy weather. In Lisbon you'll also be reminded that Queens (New York) was named after a Portuguese queen whose statue was to stand by the Hudson but is now in Lisbon by Vasco da Gama Bridge, a bridge named after the great explorer which will remind you of this city's role in world exploration and the "discovery" of the New World. There is a lot to see and do in Lisbon and you'll especially love the fairytale town that is Sintra nearby.
