La Tomatina Festival Starts This Week

This week the city of Buñol in Spain turns completely red with the annual La Tomatina Festival. The world’s biggest tomato fight this year starts August 27th.

As in the past, La Tomatina begins Wednesday morning with the famous  “palo jabón”, where contestants shimmy up a greased pole to drop a ham from the top into the crowd below. Singing, dancing, and all manner of revelry ensue, usually leading up to the culmination event where some 40 metric tons of tomatoes are thrown in the world’s largest food fight.

Once the square in Buñol is turned completely red, myriad other gastronomy and entertainment events ensue. For more information on this year’s event, please visit the event’s website via the link above, or contact them via Twitter @LaTomatinaInfo.
