Western Crete is once again making international waves. Three beaches within the Municipality of Kissamos have secured leading positions in the latest global rankings by Tripadvisor, reaffirming the region’s enduring appeal.
Among the world’s top twenty beaches for 2026, as voted by travelers, the following Cretan shores stand out:
- Elafonissi – 2nd place worldwide
- Balos Lagoon – 3rd place worldwide
- Falasarna – 11th place worldwide
Also featured on the list is Palaiokastritsa, ranking 14th and reinforcing Greece’s strong presence on the global coastal map.
Topping the 2026 list is Isla Pasion in Mexico.
Recognition Built on Consistency
This distinction is not a first for Kissamos. The municipality has repeatedly earned international attention for beaches that combine natural beauty with strategic environmental management.
According to Kostas Koukouarakis, special environmental advisor to the Municipality of Kissamos, the achievement reflects sustained tourism planning and collaboration, particularly between Kissamos and the Municipality of Kantanos–Selino for the management of Elafonissi.
The 2025 ranking saw Elafonissi claim the top global position — a distinction no other Greek beach has achieved.
What Sets These Beaches Apart
Elafonissi continues to captivate visitors with its pink-hued sand and shallow turquoise waters, often described as one of the most exotic destinations in Western Crete.
Balos Lagoon, located approximately 55 kilometers northwest of Chania, remains a favorite for families due to its calm, shallow waters and striking white sand backdrop framed by Gramvousa.
Falasarna, ranked 11th, is celebrated for its open horizon, clean waters, and sunset views that draw visitors seeking both tranquility and spectacle.
