First time visitors to Heraklion who wake up early will find a lesser mentioned wonder in the morning sunrise over Koules and the marina. This share shows just how remarkable this part of the city is. For those of us who live here, a walk along the breakwater is often the highlight of the day.
Built by the Republic of Venice in the early 16th century, Koules Fortress is one of Heraklion’s most iconic attractions. And as you can see, even on a stormy day Cretans and tourists witness the dynamics only the sea and ancient shores can provide. The city is never bored, on account of this synergy.
On the outskirts of Heraklion you will find one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Agia Pelagia used to be a lonely fishing village, and before that the site of the ancient port of Apollonia. Today, Cretan friends recall their weddings, their romantic experiences, and travelers share their picture postcard moments in this idyllic little town on the bay. We go every chance we get. There’s nothing more meaningful for visitors to Heraklion than to experience life here as the locals live it. Each day I venture out to find the perfect sunset. And on Crete, even Santorini cannot compare with these precious end of day moments. I apologize for the shameless self-promotion here, but unless you’ve had a coffee, a bougatsa, and a bottle of amazing Nikos Gavalas wine at Heraklion’s most famous cafe, Phyllosophies, you have not lived as well as you could have. Seriously, I would be doing my readers a disservice if I did not recommend such Cretan excellence.
