In collaboration with the famous village of Thrapsano and the cultural organization Municipality of Minoa Pediadas, Dr. Rethymiotakis will lead a journey of discovery into the fascinating world of Minoan life, and for observing the amazing pottery technology from the Bronze Age.

As part of the “HAMMA WATER FIRE” events being held from 11 to 14 July, this archaeological opportunity is part of the British School at Athens and the Centre for the Study of Modern Pottery effort to expand public knowledge of these amazing pieces of Greek heritage.

Co-organized by the Region of Crete and with the participation of the Inspectorate of Antiquities of Heraklion and the Potters of Θραψάνου, tonight’s chance at revisiting distant antiquity is a rare look into the foundations of the world we enjoy today.

The Galatas Minoan Palace, equal to that of Zakros, is situated on a rocky hill in the area of Galatiani Kefala. It is the oldest complex of this kind in Crete which has all the main architectural features of the Minoan palace.

The palace and the city underneath remained hidden to all but a very few local farmers until George Rethymiotakis revealed the palace to the waiting world. The fourth largest Minoan Palace in Crete, and its city around it, date from the Middle Minoan (1700-1650 BC) period.

From this site, a large number of findings, like pots and stone tools, indicate the development of specialized craft in the field of food preparation. The palace next to the holy cave of Arkalohori offers an exceptional view of the sea.

Be sure to take part in the MINOAN TASTE (Meal inspired by the Minoan diet) fest that will be held on Sunday, July 14th prepared by archaeologist Dr. Jerrolyne Morisson using modern copies of Minoan ceramic cookware. This and other amazing events of the festival will be held at the public school in Thrapsano Village.
