HSU Unveils Revamped Hotel Star Ratings in Europe

Anemos Luxury Grand Resort (Crete)

On Friday, the Hotelstars Union (HSU) announced a revamped set of guidelines and a point-based system for classifying hotels (hotel star ratings) with the aim of elevating the guest experience. Unveiled during HOTREC’s 88th General Assembly in Budapest, this updated star rating system is slated to take effect in January 2025.

According to Hotelstars, the revision was prompted by the need to address sustainability concerns, staffing challenges, and the ongoing digital transformation within the hotel industry.

The new classification catalogue is a result of our commitment to sustainability, efficiency and guest satisfaction.

Markus Luthe, President of HSU

Markus Luthe, President of HSU, underscored the importance of streamlining the criteria catalogue, reducing it from 247 to 239 elements. Key priorities included eliminating outdated criteria and integrating sustainability measures, such as recommendations for extending mattress lifespan through proper cleaning and reducing the provision of unnecessary items in guest rooms. Notable changes encompass the removal of sewing and shoe polishing kits and the provision of fresh bed linens and towels only upon guest request.

The revised guidelines for hotel star ratings propose reducing mandatory reception and room service hours across Europe to address the staffing shortages. Moreover, automated check-in and check-out processes, especially for 1- and 2-star hotels, along with self-service kiosks, aim to enhance efficiency while minimizing the ecological impact.

Notably, hotels measuring their carbon footprint according to international standards will be eligible for additional points.

Luthe urged member countries to implement the new criteria by January 1, 2025, providing hotels with a clear roadmap for the next five years.

Hotel classification criteria are reviewed every five to six years to further develop and modernize them in accordance with guest needs and market demands. This ensures that industry standards keep pace with the evolving requirements and dynamics of the hospitality sector.

The official criteria for the hotel star ratings will be available on the HSU website, and interested hotels can find more information here.
