Restaurant and café owners in eastern Crete are joining forces to tackle growing challenges they say are affecting both local businesses and the visitor experience.
Representatives of the Ierapetra Café and Catering Association and the Agios Nikolaos Hospitality Association recently met to discuss a coordinated approach to issues ranging from roadworks and operating costs to noise regulations and tourism.
Among the biggest concerns is the ongoing construction along sections of the Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK or VOAK). Business owners argue that repeated traffic disruptions are making it more difficult for visitors to reach Lasithi, reducing customer numbers during the busy tourism season.
The associations also raised concerns about the financial pressures facing hospitality businesses, citing higher operating costs and weaker consumer spending despite another strong summer for tourism across much of the island.
Another topic on the agenda was Greece’s enforcement of noise regulations. Hospitality representatives say they support reasonable rules that protect residents’ quality of life but are calling for a more balanced legal framework that allows businesses to operate without facing disproportionate penalties over sound level limits.
The meeting also marked renewed cooperation between hospitality organizations across Lasithi, with both sides agreeing to strengthen communication and coordinate future initiatives through the local federation of professionals and businesses.
