The Venetian Walls of Heraklion are getting a little more inviting on weekends, with two municipal refreshment kiosks now extending their opening hours to give visitors and residents an easy place to stop for a drink while exploring the city’s historic fortifications.
The two kiosks, operated by DEPANAL SA, are located above Jesus Gate (Kainourgia Porta) and Pantokrator Gate (Chania Gate).
Both began operating in early July and have been opening daily from 4:30 pm.
From the coming weekend, however, their hours will be extended on Saturdays and Sundays. Both locations will remain open from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm, making them considerably more useful for people visiting the walls during the daytime.
A Break Above Heraklion
The refreshment kiosks offer something fairly simple, but in a city where sightseeing often means walking in the heat, simple can be very welcome.
The Venetian Walls surround the historic core of Heraklion and provide some of the city’s best opportunities to experience its monumental landscape from above. Adding places to stop for refreshments gives visitors another reason to linger rather than walk through.
For tourists exploring Heraklion independently, the extended weekend hours also mean the walls can become part of a more relaxed morning or afternoon itinerary rather than a stop that has to be squeezed into the evening.
And yes, sometimes the difference between “Let’s walk around the old walls” and “Jesus Christ, I need a drink” is approximately 35 minutes in the Cretan sun.
From Public Infrastructure to Everyday Space
DEPANAL says it is continuing to create and support spaces that naturally become part of residents’ everyday lives while also highlighting Heraklion’s public spaces and history.
The two kiosks are part of that effort, combining a practical service with some of the city’s most recognizable historic surroundings.
With the new weekend schedule, the refreshment points will be open during the busiest daytime hours for people taking a walk, exercising, sightseeing, or simply looking for somewhere to sit and cool down.
Heraklion doesn’t need to turn every historic monument into a tourist attraction with a gift shop attached. Sometimes a cold drink, a place to sit, and a spectacular view are enough.
And putting those basics on the Venetian Walls makes the city’s historic core a little easier to enjoy, for locals and visitors alike.
