The Municipality of Heraklion is in the final stages of completing a major technological project titled “Smart City and Sustainability Actions of the Municipality of Heraklion.” The initiative aims to improve daily life for residents by integrating modern tech into smart mobility, security, environmental protection, energy management, and public administration.
Core Smart Systems Deployed
- 🌍 Seismic Activity Monitoring: Sensors have been installed in municipal buildings (specifically in Vasilies, on Machis Kritis Street, and Androgeou Street). These provide real-time data on the structural health and seismic behavior of the buildings, allowing for immediate safety measures and technical evaluations.
- 🗑️ “Pay As You Throw” (PAYT) Waste Management: A pilot program applying the “polluter pays” principle. It uses electronic tagging and pricing for waste, currently targeting large waste-producing businesses in Heraklion. This helps track waste volume, optimizes collection routes, and promotes fairer, more sustainable waste management.
- 📡 LoRaWAN IoT Network: A specialized, low-power, long-range communication network has been established to support the Internet of Things (IoT). It seamlessly connects various smart sensors and devices to the municipality’s central decision-making hubs.
- ⚡ Resource Tracking: Systems are in place to monitor traffic, as well as the energy and water consumption of municipal buildings.
Data Utilization and Privacy
- Evidence-Based Decisions: The data collected is analyzed by the municipality’s scientific staff to track city operations, identify issues, and plan corrective infrastructure interventions.
- Privacy Assured: All data collection and storage strictly adhere to the guidelines of the Data Protection Authority, ensuring full respect for citizens’ personal data.
Project Background and Funding
- The project is funded by the Recovery and Resilience Fund under the broader national initiative “Greek Smart Cities – Investments in SSC infrastructures and systems for a sustainable & green urban future.”
- The project was initiated during the previous municipal term, and its implementation is actively continuing under the current administration.
For residents, the most significant change may ultimately be less about seeing smart technology around the city and more about whether the data actually translates into better services, more efficient waste collection, safer public buildings, and more responsive municipal infrastructure.
