Closing Hours at Heraklion Archaeological Museum Outrage Visitors

The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion has faced criticism from tourists due to its unexpected closure in the afternoon hours. While advertised as open until 8 PM, the museum’s operating hours have been curtailed to 3:30 PM during this period, catching many visitors off guard. Tour guides have reported receiving complaints from disgruntled tourists who arrive after 4 PM only to find the doors closed. The official website, however, clearly states the visiting hours in April.

This discrepancy stems from a staffing shortage, which has yet to be resolved even after a month. As a result, some tourists find themselves rushed, hastily departing the antiquities of Knossos to visit the museum before its early closure, leaving little time for leisurely strolls or shopping in Heraklion’s historic centre.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion (AMI), Ioakeim Gryspolakis, provided an update on the museum’s operations. The key points are:

  1. New opening hours after hiring additional staff:
    • Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday: 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM
    • Wednesday: 1:30 PM – 9:30 PM
    • Thursday and Sunday: 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM
  2. Ongoing improvements and renovations:
    • Upgrading the outdated and energy-inefficient air conditioning system
    • Enhancing accessibility between exhibition areas and the Periodical Exhibition Hall
    • Relocating and expanding the museum store and refreshment area
    • Upgrading the Lecture and Conference Hall with better lighting, acoustics, and technology
    • Modernizing the museological presentation and information about exhibits
    • Improving the Maintenance Laboratory with new equipment
  3. Collaborative efforts:
    • Partnering with the Technical University of Crete and the Municipality of Heraklion for architectural studies and urban renewal projects
    • Cooperating with universities and institutions for exhibition modernization, digitization, and innovative ideas
    • Planning a touring exhibition of Minoan culture in China, starting in Beijing in 2025
  4. Revenue generation:
    • Introducing museum-branded merchandise inspired by Knossos frescoes
    • Transferring operation of the refreshment area to the museum for direct revenue

Through these ongoing initiatives, the museum aims to meet international standards, enhance visitor experience, and promote Crete’s rich cultural heritage.
