Heraklion Airport handled more than 1.85 million arriving and departing passengers in August, with international arrivals up 3.47 percent from last year and domestic arrivals rising 7.16 percent. Germany remained the leading foreign market, while France, Poland, the Netherlands, Israel, Italy, Austria and the Czech Republic also generated significant traffic.
For visitors arriving in Crete, the numbers tell the story of another exceptionally busy peak season.
10,944 Aircraft Movements in One Month
During August, Heraklion’s Nikos Kazantzakis Airport recorded 10,944 aircraft movements.
Passenger traffic reached:
- 907,933 arrivals
- 942,786 departures
- 1,850,719 passengers combined
International arrivals alone reached 812,039, compared with 784,809 in August 2025.
That represents an additional 27,230 international passengers and growth of 3.47 percent on an already exceptionally strong previous year.
Domestic traffic grew even faster.
Arrivals from within Greece increased from 89,486 in August 2025 to 95,897 this August, a rise of 7.16 percent.
Two Extraordinary Days
The pressure on the airport was particularly evident at the beginning of the month.
On August 1, 68,818 passengers passed through the airport.
The following day, August 2, saw 406 aircraft movements.
Those figures give a sense of the scale of the operation required to handle Crete’s tourism peak.
Germany Leads the Way
Germany remained the largest source of international arrivals, with approximately 197,000 German visitors to Heraklion in August.
The United Kingdom followed.
France was another major market, recording 78,737 arrivals, reinforcing its position as one of Crete’s strongest and most consistent tourism markets.
Other leading markets included:
- Poland
- The Netherlands
- Israel
- Italy, with more than 59,000 arrivals
- Austria
- The Czech Republic
Greece itself ranked among the largest sources of arrivals when domestic traffic is included, with 95,897 passengers recorded during the month.
Crete’s Tourism Base Is Broadening
The August figures also show how widely distributed Heraklion’s tourism markets have become.
The airport is not relying solely on Germany and the United Kingdom. A broad mix of European and Mediterranean markets is contributing substantial numbers of visitors, giving Crete a more diversified tourism base.
That matters for the island’s tourism economy because strong performance across multiple markets can provide greater resilience when demand from any single country changes.
What Comes After the Record Numbers?
The challenge now is turning passenger volume into lasting value for Crete.
More than 1.85 million passenger movements in a single month mean more visitors using hotels, restaurants, rental cars, beaches, attractions and local businesses across the island.
The real measure of a successful tourism season, however, is not simply how many people pass through the airport.
It is how much of that enormous flow reaches the communities and businesses that make Crete what it is.
August delivered the traffic.
Now Crete has to make the most of it.
