According to the National Observatory of Athens, the heat wave that has baked much of Europe the past week will continue into the middle of this week.

Warm air from Africa will bring more intolerable heat until Wednesday, according to the weather services. Temperatures are expected to climb as high as 40C and possibly reach up to 42C in some places. The weather service says Thursday will bring a relative cool front following rain showers late Tuesday and Wednesday. When the hot air mass from Africa meets cooler air mass in the Balkans, rain and cooling will be the effect.

Below is the heat map from METEO showing the temperature forecast.

The hottest areas are expected to be the regions of Central Greece and mainly in Thessalia, where 40+ degrees are expected. For used to temperatures in Fahrenheit – 42 celsius is 107 degrees Fahrenheit.

Citizens and visitors are urged by the Greek authorities to take safety measures during the heat wave. People should be sure and stay hydrated, to avoid drinking alcohol and consuming heavy meals, as well as intense body exercise. Frequent showers and swimming, as well as keeping indoor habitats cool, are also suggested.

People should be aware, that regions where there is higher humidity will feel much hotter. As the humidity rises, the heat index climbs as well. At a heat index of between 105 and 130 Fahrenheit, sunstroke, heat cramps or heat exhaustion are far more likely, and heat stroke possible with prolonged exposure and/or physical activity.

Stay safe and cool during the next few days in Greece.
