Fraport Greece Starts Development at Kos

Following a very successful year for Kos airport, marked by a 20.7% increase in passenger traffic and an overall number of 2.3 million passengers, Fraport Greece is now implementing major upgrades to the facilities there.

According to the news, development work will begin with the restoration of degraded asphalt lawyers on the runway and the apron. These works require a partial suspension of operations from March 4 to March 19 2018. Αll medical and rescue flights will be uninterruptedly operated by helicopters. Alexander Zinell, Fraport Greece CEO, commented:

“Our plan for the massive overhaul of Kos airport has begun. The safety of our passengers is a top priority for us, and for this reason, the reconstruction of the runway and apron pavement has been scheduled during the off-season. Kos airport will welcome the summer season with a brand new infrastructure serving the growing tourism business on the island. Simultaneously Fraport Greece is starting the works for a completely new terminal building that will replace the outdated old building.”

Fraport Greece plans for the development of the Kos Airport also include:

  • A new terminal of 23,106 m2
  • A 201% increase in the total size of the airport
  • A new fire station
  • Refurbishment/expansion of the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP)
  • 75% increase in the number of Check-in Stations (from 16 to 28)
  • and a 125% increase in the number of security lanes (from 4 to 9)

Fraport Greece will develop the 14 Greek regional airports into competitive airports that are operated in accordance with international aviation standards and guidelines.

Fraport Greece has finalized development plans for the 14 regional airports that take into consideration the specific needs of each location. The development plans foresee the modernization, development and/or expansion of the airports’ infrastructure as the case may be which include works from the refurbishment of existing terminals to the construction of new landside and airside facilities. In total, Fraport Greece will invest around EUR 400 million in the development of the airports’ infrastructure until 2021.
