For Brits Visiting Greece: Time to “Get Ready for Brexit”

Greece's Get Ready for Brexit sister site

The U.K. government has issued instructions online for Great Britain citizens to get prepared for Brexit. The “Get Ready for Brexit” site offers important advice for British citizens intending to travel to the EU after October 31st.

According to the website, citizens need to renew their passports earlier than planned. I addition, it is advised that citizens buy a GB sticker for their car. The “Get Ready” site is part of a bigger advertising campaign launched on Sunday that declares Brexit will absolutely take place next month.

Other snippets of advice include a caution to pet owners intending to travel, that it may take as long as four months to get permission to take a pet on a trip. British citizens who reside in the UK may now have to pay roaming charges on their trips and be subjected to border checks that were not in place when Britain was part of the EU. Also, citizens with European health insurance cards will need to affirm their coverage is still in effect in the event of a no-deal on Brexit.

The Get Ready aggregates existing government advice. EU citizens living in the UK are also addressed and reminded to apply to the settlement scheme “as soon as possible” if they want to remain in the country. Here is a pertinent section of the Get Ready announcement:

UK citizens intending to travel to Europe and all exporters to the EU will be targeted, alongside groups requiring particular information such as the equine industry and legal professions. Some of the key actions audiences need to take include:

  • Acquiring an Economic Operator Registration and Identification number to export to the EU. Businesses that are VAT registered will automatically issue an EORI number, but micro-businesses still need to register themselves.
  • Obtaining the correct documents to transport goods at the border.
  • Applying for the vital support packages available for businesses, such as grants.

For UK citizens who are currently living in Grece, Get Ready advises the following:

  • register or apply for residency
  • check if you are covered for healthcare and register if necessary
  • exchange your UK driving license for a license issued by the EU country where you live
  • check your passport

Meanwhile, Greece issued guidance for UK travelers intending to visit after Brexit. The Greek government has created a website to inform UK citizens what to do to minimize the negative effects of a hard Brexit. The site provides answers are for a series of questions concerning mobility; residence and work permit; travel arrangements (visa-passport); healthcare; Greek nationality; and elections.
