We are actually familiar with this part of Chania and Crete. Kavos and Zorba’s Beach are at the end of an arid but beautiful peninsula jutting out into the Cretan Sea, a perfect place for both seclusion and capturing the real flavor of Crete. Just around the corner from the beach, the Nanakis Beach Apartments afford an alternative kind of family economy with a luxurious feel too.
Metochi Villas
Also near Chania, down the coast to Platanias, Metochi Villas (above) is an accommodation set amid natural spleandor in the village of the same name. Our team stayed at Metochi two years ago for three weeks. For those of you intent on sampling what it is like to be Cretan, this is one of the most genuine accommodations on the island. Finally, for the most unique and pampered experience of your life, I cannot recommend more fervently any villa rental beyond that of my friend VanGos Tsourlakis. Airbnb’s top host has transformed a small village mill into a stunning villa stay that is unforgettable.

The Nanakis Beach Apartments are situated at the beach of the same name, next door to the beach Anthony Quinn made famous for his portrayal of Zorba. Accommodations here can be had for as little as €270 euro per week for a one bedroom apartment. For just over €500 per week, guests can enjoy a 2 bedroom apartment overlooking the sea.
Metochi Villas is situated in the traditional hamlet of Metohi just outside the Maleme resort, just 3km from Platanias seaside amenities. The beach is a short walk, but the olive groves and villagers that made Crete famous are right outside your door. 7 nights at the Villa Laina where we stayed runs from about €1000 euro for a 4 bedroom villa. Other accommodations are available, but beware most full weeks are booked solid now.
VanGos’ Grotto Villa is available still for some weeks and days. Weeks run for about €1236 euro in May (only 1 week left) and just under €1900 euro for peak season stays. Be advised, most peak season weeks are fully booked now.
