An Englishman in Berlin

When I was 16 I embarked on a school trip to the City of Berlin. If you have never been to Germany before in my opinion it has these top three things to offer.

  • Great Food;
  • Friendly and lively atmosphere;
  • Great Beer.

Now, the last one may be because at the age of 16 I had not tasted too many beers, but I remember thinking at the time “this is a great beer”; but unfortunately I can’t for the life of me remember the make.

I am a nervous flyer, so was a little horrified that I was the only person in my class that was not sat with everybody else, this is because my second name begins with ‘W’, and I was at the end of the register. Moreover, as I buried my face in my hands and lifted my head, on the back of the headrest in front of my read the comforting tagline “You’re flying with Skoda” – Cosmic.

Arriving in Germany we found our way to our accommodation, which was one of the less glamorise Berlin Hotels we had driven passed on our way into the city.

Activities

Obviously we had a full itinerary booked in; we were there to learn of course! First stop the 1936 Olympic stadium, so we embarked on what felt like THE LONGEST WALK IN THE HISTORY OF WALKING only to find the stadium was closed for refurbishment. We checked out the Berlin wall and even visited the Zoo and actually saw not one, but two different species fornicating, which was interesting – the difference between a Donkey and a Turtle male sexual initiation was stark.

Food

When I think back to my time in Germany and think of the food, I think ‘meat’. I don’t think you will ever find a better German sausage anywhere in the world, nor even, dare I say a kebab. Quite simply the food in Germany is really good and I recommend you try as many different type as possible (even the Pizza was outstanding).

Nightlife

Being 16, we didn’t really delve into the nightlife, but we did get to walk around the town and found that there was a very friendly and party-like atmosphere. We even found a pub and tasted a range of different German beers – one thing you may or may not know, but in Europe the foam head on the beer is not considered, and by that I mean they just pour away and leave a huge head on the beer – just thought that was odd.

All in all my time in Germany was great, I would certainly recommend visiting Berlin, it has a plethora of things to do, great food and beer and from what I saw, a good night life. Just make sure you check ahead if you want to visit the Olympic stadium.
