A wildfire broke out Tuesday afternoon near Drimiskos in southern Rethymno, prompting an immediate response from Crete’s Fire Service.
Eight firefighting vehicles carrying 16 firefighters are currently operating at the scene, supported by two EMODE teams, the specialist forest-firefighting units trained for difficult terrain and rapidly developing wildfires.
The latest information is reassuring. No residential areas are currently threatened, and there are no reports of strong winds in the area. That is particularly important in Crete, where wind can turn a manageable fire into a very different problem remarkably quickly.
Firefighters at the scene report conditions that are allowing them to work effectively, with the current assessment suggesting that the blaze can be brought under control soon.
Crews remain in the area to contain the fire completely and guard against possible flare-ups.
The Good News, For Once
For residents and visitors in southern Rethymno, the immediate picture is relatively calm: no homes are under threat, strong winds are absent, and firefighting forces are already fully engaged.
That does not mean the operation is over. Crews will need to secure the area and make sure apparently contained sections do not reignite, particularly in dry vegetation.
For now, however, the combination of rapid response and auspicious weather conditions is working in their favor.
