A wildfire that broke out on Saturday afternoon near the village of Drapeti in the Municipality of Minoa Pediada, Heraklion, has been largely brought under control following a rapid response by firefighting crews.
The blaze, which erupted at around 2:30 p.m., burned agricultural land in a small ravine planted with olive groves. Strong winds complicated firefighting efforts, prompting authorities to deploy substantial ground forces supported by aerial firefighting aircraft.
According to local officials, the fire was contained before it could spread beyond the ravine or threaten nearby homes.
By late afternoon, the situation had improved significantly after firefighters managed to halt the fire’s advance despite the challenging weather conditions.
Fire crews remain at the scene to extinguish remaining hotspots and guard against possible flare-ups, as gusty winds continue to raise the risk of reignition.
The cause of the fire has not yet been reported.
