A mild earthquake disrupted this tranquil Monday morning in Crete. The seismic event, which registered a magnitude of 4.6 on the Richter scale, happened around 8:55 a.m. According to data from the Geodynamic Institute, the epicentre of this tremor was pinpointed 24 kilometres southsoutheast of Zakros.
The initial readings, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), are subject to refinements as experts assess further data and await additional insights from various geoscience teams.
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) later issued an update, indicating a 4.8 magnitude, suggesting a possible reevaluation of the initial figures. Despite its strength, there appeared to be no significant structural damage. However, inhabitants close to its core likely sensed the tremor as a gentle vibration.

“The earthquake was in the maritime area, we are not concerned at all, it was isolated,” said seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos in an interview with Newsbomb.
