Eastern Europe has many countries with lovely cities and romantic destinations. We selected 5 such romantic and maybe less known cities. All of them have something special to offer and could be a nice surprise for those wanting to try something new for Valentine’s Day.
1. Český Krumlov, Czech Republic
A small town dating back to the Middle Ages, Český Krumlov is what we could call a jewel as it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The name is believed to be derived from the German “Krumme Aue”, which means “crooked meadow”. The city has an interesting history with legends mixing with facts. A walk through the historic old town, a visit to Český Krumlov Castle around which the city was built and a romantic dinner in the evening could prove to be a special Valentine’s Day. Moreover, between 8 and 12 February 2013 there is also a carnival which will bring good food, colourful costumed carnival procession and other events.
2. Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria
This city city in north central Bulgaria could very well be a good and romantic alternative destination to many or more famous cities in the area. Veliko Tarnovo was the historical capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, and today is a city perfect for those wanting to take walks and to be conquered by the city’s charm. It has many lovely streets – in fact you have to go to see the houses on Gurko Street -, several small churches, many restaurants with accessible prices and famous medieval stronghold Tsarevets. In some nights there is a special lights and sound show – a must not miss.
3. Zadar, Croatia
If you want to enjoy Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast without the crowds, then Zadar is the perfect choice. This city offers an interesting mix of old times – you’ll find Roman ruins here – with Romanesque churches, art installations and many lovely restaurants and bars. The city also features a sea organ that transforms waves into some sort of a sad song. Other activities may include boat excursions to other tourism attractions in the area, including an archipelago of smaller islands. Four national parks are also within driving distance if you want to explore the region. As a romantic destination, the city has something more to provide: one of the world’s most beautiful sunsets, according to Alfred Hitchcock.
4. Sighişoara, Romania
If you are in for a splendid blend of medieval times with present ones, then Sighişoara is the place to be. Located in the famous Transylvania region, the city’s historical center is a part of UNESCO World Heritage. Each year Sighisoara, one of the few medieval citadels still inhabited in Europe, hosts, usually in June or July, a medieval festival which lets people travel back in time of knights and duels and enjoy open-air theater and poetry. You can however enjoy the lovely old buildings and admire the city without all the noise and agitation of a festival on Saint Valentine’s Day. There are many offers which include welcome packs – even with champagne, candle lights and rose petals – and romantic dinners at famous local restaurants.

5. Corfu, Greece
