Coming Soon in Greece: Demetria Festival in Thessaloniki

Demetria Festival, the annual art and culture festival held in Thessaloniki, Greece, will soon launch and has an impressive number of events prepared for locals and visitors from all over the world. Between September 26th and October 24th, various locations will host many events that will enchant you!

Dance, art, galleries, movies, children dedicated events and even writing workshops take place during this month in Thessaloniki, making this city an important cultural hub in this period of time. Bensousan Khan will host a photo exhibition, Of Ink and Light, with works by Daniel Morntzinski, “the photographer of the authors’.

On 27th, 28th and 29th September takes place The Golden Child series of art workshops for children at Thessaloniki Port Authority – Port, Pier A. admission is free. Large surfaces of the port will be painted by kids during this three days event and will reflect their creativity!

Theatre of the Society for Macedonian Studies will host a theatre event that will bring several fragments of old Greek tragedies and excerpts from “Syssimon or Chapters” in the interpretation of the modern Theatre Company Area.

A show dedicated to the memory of Theo Angelopoulos will take place on September 28th and 29th at The National Opera.

SYMFAGOMEN, the inaugural event, will take place on September 29th and will highlight the diversity of the 48th Demetria festival, one that embraces all the forms of art.

The theatre segment of this festival will include other important plays like Charmolypi (free admission at Aneton Theatre), Alarme by Theatre Company ‘Attis’, with free admission, a play about the love-hate relationship, between Elizabeth I and Mary Stuart that ends in Mary Stuart’s death, Golfo, by Spyridon Peresiades, National Theatre (the Greek response to Shakespeare’s Juliet), Nora, by of Henry Ibsen, played by the group «tgStan», Blue, a deep and meaningful approach to everyday life, and Weather History, a play for children of all age.

Demetria Festival includes a lot of music and dance events such as Play For Thessaloniki (at Bensousan Khan with free admission), The Roots (at Theatre Company of Macedonian Studies), The poetry and poetics in the work of Pina Bausch (at Thessaloniki Concert Hall, Maurice Hall Saltiel with free admission), Addio, addio amore, A piece for Pina (on 7th and 8th October at Thessaloniki Concert Hall, Hall Emil Riadis), Greece-Cyprus: New Trends in contemporary dance (at Aneton Theatre), Tango Toilet (a Public performance to showcase the city’s shopping) and more.

TISFF 2013, THESS International Short Film Festival, also takes place in this period – between 23rd and 24th October at Cultural Center Alexander.

Moreover, on October 3rd it’s Night Art, with all galleries and museums open!
