Asterousia Mountains Cycling Network Plan Approved in Crete

Crete advances alternative tourism with a new network of cycling routes in the Asterousia Mountains, connecting villages, landscapes, and cultural sites.

The Municipal Committee of the Municipality of Minoa Pediada has approved a programmatic agreement plan to create a network of signposted cycling routes across the Asterousia Mountains. This move strategically strengthens alternative tourism while reconnecting Crete’s often-overlooked hinterland.
In parallel, the municipality is aligning with neighboring local authorities to jointly submit a proposal under the “Crete Programme 2021–2027” and the flagship action “OHE Emblematic Routes of Crete / Environment and Culture.” The goal is clear: to establish a cohesive framework of interventions with a defined development focus rather than scattered, short-lived projects.
At the heart of the initiative lies the creation of a structured, fully signposted cycling network throughout the greater Asterousia region. The routes are designed to connect settlements, natural landscapes, and cultural landmarks, offering varying levels of difficulty. This approach broadens the appeal—from experienced cyclists to visitors seeking a gentler, immersive way to experience Crete beyond the obvious.
The plan also includes preparing necessary studies and implementing targeted signage and enhancement works. These interventions aim to enhance the quality of outdoor activities while ensuring safe, accessible routes. Importantly, the initiative forms part of a wider collaborative scheme involving the municipalities of Archanes-Asterousia, Gortyna, and Phaistos—a rare example of coordinated planning toward a unified network of low-impact tourism infrastructure.
This intervention addresses a long-standing need in Crete’s interior: the shift from the fragmented use of natural assets to a structured, certified, and internationally competitive tourism product.
As Vasilis Kegeroglou noted, the municipality’s participation in the Asterousia cycling network is particularly important for the region. It offers both residents and visitors the opportunity to explore the area in a safe, organized way, making full use of its natural beauty, local history, and distinctive character.
