Wildfire Breaks Out Near Zoniana in Mylopotamos, Crete

Emergency crews rushed into action on Friday afternoon following a wildfire outbreak in low vegetation near the village of Zoniana, located in the Mylopotamos municipality of Rethymno.

The fire was spotted shortly before noon, triggering an immediate deployment from regional authorities. A response force consisting of 21 firefighters, seven fire trucks, and a foot module from the 3rd EMODE specialized unit is battling the blaze on the ground, supported by municipal water tankers from Mylopotamos.

Aerial support was also brought in, with a firefighting helicopter conducting targeted drops to hold back the flames.

The outbreak coincides with a Category 3 (High Risk) fire danger rating issued across Crete. An arson investigation unit from Rethymno is currently at the scene working to determine the exact origin of the fire.
