Strong Winds Disrupt Flights At Heraklion Airport

Strong winds disrupted landings at Heraklion Airport, forcing flight diversions from Athens and Rhodes. 2026 update.

  • Strong winds disrupted arrivals at Heraklion Airport early today
  • Flights from Athens and Rhodes were unable to land safely
  • A cargo flight was also affected, impacting transport schedules

Early-morning weather conditions posed significant challenges at Heraklion’s Nikos Kazantzakis Airport, as strong winds made landing procedures unusually difficult. Pilots approaching the island encountered rapidly shifting gusts that reduced visibility and stability during the final approach.

As a result, at least two flights were unable to reach Heraklion. A scheduled arrival from Rhodes was diverted after the flight crew assessed that conditions did not allow for a safe landing. The same decision was taken by the crew of a cargo aircraft departing from Athens, which was carrying commercial freight destined for Crete.

Athens Flight Returns Before Successful Second Attempt

A further complication involved a morning passenger flight from Athens. The aircraft initially attempted to land but was forced to abandon the approach and return to Eleftherios Venizelos Airport. After a temporary easing of wind conditions, the flight departed again and later arrived in Heraklion with delay.

The episode highlights how quickly weather systems can disrupt air travel on Crete, particularly during strong winds. Travelers moving through Heraklion Airport are advised to stay in close contact with their airlines and allow extra time, as further flight schedule adjustments remain possible while conditions persist.
