Crete Region Funds “Chrissi Island Management Plan”

Crete's Governor Stavros Arnaoutakis with Crete University Dean Dr. George Kontakis

The Region of Crete, with the cooperation of the Museum of Natural History, the University of Crete, and of the MAICH, is undertaking a bold research initiative to provide new knowledge on the island’s ecosystems.

The program, “Chrissi Island Management Plan,” was just signed into effect by the Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis, the Rector of the University of Crete, George Kontakis, and the Director of the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute (MAICH) George Baourakis.

According to the news from the Region of Crete, the program will, for the first time, record data on the Mediterranean Monk Seal (Monachus Monachus), the Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta Caretta), and other endangered species.

The “Chrissi Island Management Plan,” is an annual plan of action on Crete and is keenly focused on the Lasithi regional unit.

Also included in these new studies will be research into the habits of birds wintering on Crete, and the migration of important breeding species such as the Shag, the Πετροτρουλίδα, the long-legged buzzard, the Herring Gulls and a few nocturnal and diurnal predators and seabirds.
