The USGS has reported a magnitude 5.0 earthquake off the south coast of Crete at 07:02 and 50 seconds local time this morning. The epicenter of the tremor was 75 km south of Pyrgos, in the Libyan Sea. The coordinates were 34.334°N 24.982°E according to the earthquake reporting center.
Earlier news from the Athens Geodynamic Institute told of the region of Ileia in the southern Peloponnese was shaken by a 4.6-magnitude quake just before 1 a.m. on Saturday. Another quake of 3.9 magnitudes around the same time rattled Crete residents slightly.
The epicenter of the Ionian Sea tremor was about 53 kilometers southwest of the town of Kyparissia, registering a depth of 3.5 kilometers. This quake was felt as far away as Gargalianoi, Kyparissia, Marathopoli, and other areas of Messinia and Ileia. The Crete quake’s epicenter was 53 kilometers southeast of Timpaki on the island’s south coast at a depth of 12.4 kilometers.
Crete and mainland Greece have been hit by a series of light and middle magnitude earthquakes this summer. The island has had 23 earthquakes in the last 365 days according to Earthquake Track. The strongest quake to strike the island recently was a 6.6 magnitude event 6 years ago near Kissamos, in the far west of the island.
No damage was reported from any of these most recent quakes.
