Crete Gets Tourism Ministry Support for Special Interest Travel Segment

Greece’s Tourism Minister Harry Theoharis announced support in the offing for the Region of Crete for the development of special interest tourism products aimed at attracting travelers to the island year-round.

Minister Theoharis met with Crete Regional Governor Stavros Arnaoutakis in Athens this week and agreed to work together towards channeling knowhow and ministry support into upgrade projects and actions that will create value-added for Crete’s tourist product.

The minister took note of the fact the development of special interest tourism is a basic component of the ministry’s long-term strategy. He also said the focus should be on tapping into theme tourism, an area which he believes, Crete has great potential to develop.

Also, the island’s regional authority announced this week that it would be granting an additional €15 million euros to newly set-up small and medium-sized tourism ventures on the island.

Over the course of the last year, the region has allocated a total of €28 million euros – from the Crete Operational Program 2014-2020 – to investment projects aimed at upgrading the tourism services and products offered.
