Coming up in Chania, the art exhibition “Ney Matogrosso”

Νέυ Ματογκρόσο: Ωραίος σαν Έλληνας – Η Ελληνική Μυθολογία εμπνέει έναν Επαναστάτη

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Chania, “Ney Matogrosso – Handsome as a Greek – Greek Mythology inspires a Revolutionist” an art exhibition by Alkistis Michaelides will be on display until March 30th.

According to the news from Kissamos News, the title of the exhibition is inspired by a verse by the prominent Greek poet Nikos Engonopoulos (1907-1985) from the poem “Bolivar” referring to the conquest of freedom in Latin America.

Nikos Engonopoulos was a renowned Greek poet and artist, one of the most prominent representatives of the Greek generation of the 1930s, and the leading figure of the Surrealist movement in Greece. The art historian Dr. Megaklis Rogakos notes for the exhibition:

“For Michaelides, Ney Matogrosso is an emblematic figure, a symbol of freedom, and a lone rebel who, through art, has claimed individual liberties. He  boldly defends what the real and genuine man has within him.In addition, with his ability to masquerade and transform, he awakened  the archetypal images and elements of Greek mythology. ”

Open from Monday and Saturday from 10 am – 1 pm and Monday & Thursday 6 pm – 8 pm, the admission to this amazing exhibition is free. The exhibition is being held at the Municipal Library of Chania, 30 Ypsilando, Chania, Crete. For more information please phone: 2821 341662
