China Eastern Airlines (IATA: MU, ICAO: CES) will formally begin operating a new direct route between Shanghai and Marseille, France, on July 2 of this year.

Shanghai Airlines, a China Eastern Airlines affiliate, will run the new Shanghai-Marseille route. There will be three weekly round-trip flights on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

FM871 is the flight number from Shanghai to Marseille, while FM872 is the flight number on the return trip. The flight should last about twelve hours. Passengers on the new route can access the internet from gate to gate.

Situated near the Yangtze River estuary and facing the Pacific Ocean, Shanghai is one of China’s most innovative, open, and dynamic cities in terms of economy. It is known as “the grand halls” and the “first port of call for visitors arriving in China.” The largest port in southern Europe, Marseille is the second-biggest city in France and a significant hub for Mediterranean commerce and shipping. It is located on Provence’s beautiful blue shoreline. Shanghai and Marseille were joined as sister cities in 1987.

This year is the China-France Year of Culture and Tourism, in addition to the 60th anniversary of the diplomatic ties between China and France. Shanghai officially unveiled a detailed guide to its 2024 activities on April 9. It features a broad range of 70 premier commercial, sports, cultural, and exhibition events. The 2024 Summer Olympics sailing competitions will take place in Marseille from July 28 to August 8, Paris.

The inaugural flight from Shanghai to Marseille will provide the first direct aviation route between these two sister towns. Additionally, China Eastern Airlines will start service on this route before any other carrier.

Tickets are currently on sale for this route. Visitors to Shanghai or Marseille can purchase tickets and obtain further information by visiting China Eastern Airlines’ official website and mobile app.
