Chechnya Plans to Modernize Grozny Airport

Chechnya plans important development and modernization works to its Grozny Airport (IATA: GRV , ICAO: URMG), which will include the construction of a five-star hotel nearby, and a modern parking for cars. According to news reported by Vestnik Kavkaza, the Russian Transport Ministry has already reached an agreement with the country’s Finance Ministry and the funds needed for modernization are currently being calculated.

The radical upgrade of the airport may also include lengthening the runway with 1,100 meters, which will allow the airport to accept almost all types of aircraft. According to news reports, the airport already acquired three YAK planes to extend its fleet, and plans to buy CRG jets for domestic flights, as well as Airbus jets, for both international and local flights.

Chechen Leader Ramzan Kadyrov told the media that Grozny Airport and its local airline “Grozny-Avia” are now a significant part of a federal program to further develop the transport system of the Russian Federation.

“In the long run, we plan to make our airport one of the best in the country”- said Kadyrov .

He also explained the media that the airline prefers YAK planes because they are safer than others, and that European Airbus jets are regarded as better than their American Boeing counterparts.
