Bucharest Celebrates 554 Years of Documented Existence

Romania’s capital Bucharest appeared over 7 centuries ago when shepherd Bucur established a sheephold in the Vlăsiei Mountains. But times were troubled, with Turkish and Tatars attacks. According to the legend, the Tatars kidnapped Bucur’s daughter, so he decided to build a defence fortress and a church near the forest.

Time passed by, and he was joined by other people who built their homes around the fortress, establishing Bucharest (Bucureşti). The first written mention of Bucharest in a document is the one dating back to September 20, 1459. The document was issued by Vlad Ţepeş (Vlad the Impaler, aka Dracula) and specified that Bucur, Iova and Andrei were excused from obligations to the royal court.

As a side note, Bucharest became Romania’s capital in 1659, so 200 years later, under Gheorghe Ghica, by Ottoman order.

To celebrate the documentary attestation of the Capital several events were organized last weekend in Bucharest.
