A British tourist on holiday in Crete found himself battling an unexpected vacation spoiler last month: mosquitoes.
The visitor was staying at a hotel in Chania when he was bitten repeatedly, leaving his leg covered in bites. He subsequently left the accommodation and contacted the authorities seeking compensation, saying the experience had affected his mental state and ruined his holiday.
Kyriakos Kotsoglou, an appointed advisor for the Region of Crete, handled the unusual complaint and later recounted the episode.
According to Kotsoglou, the tourist sent a photograph of his bitten leg and asked the hotel to investigate, including the possibility of a partial or full refund for his stay.
He also requested that a certified health inspection company examine both the hotel room and the mattress he slept on, and that the results be sent to him.
The Room Was Inspected
Rather than dismissing the complaint, the hotel investigated the matter.
Kotsoglou explained that visitor complaints should always be taken seriously, regardless of whether the guest is ultimately found to be right or wrong.
The hotel later provided written confirmation that it found nothing problematic in the room.
Kotsoglou said the important thing in such situations is not simply deciding whether a complaint is justified, but responding promptly and respectfully so that a visitor feels heard and treated properly.
That approach appears to have worked.
The Mosquito Problem Ended with a Happy Tourist
After receiving the inspection results and a response from the Region, the British tourist considered the matter closed.
And despite the dramatic beginning to the complaint, he apparently wasn’t turned away from Crete.
He told officials that he plans to return to the island for another holiday next year.
So, ultimately, the mosquitoes may have won the battle, but Crete apparently won the tourist back.
