The International Short Film Festival “In the Palace” celebrates its 14th edition this year. The festival takes place in three cities: Veliko Tarnovo (April and May), Varna (May and June), and, finally, Balchik (June 24 to July 1).
The International Short Film Festival “In the Palace” is one of the events you won’t want to miss in 2017 according to Flight Network. The Canadian site compiled a list of 27 European film festivals worthy of your time and “In the Palace” ranks second among these.
The festival takes place in the former residence of Queen Marie of Romania, the Balchik Palace (Romanian: Castelul din Balcic) in the Southern Dobruja region of Bulgaria. The castle was constructed between 1926 and 1937, during the Romanian control of the region. The palace is, in fact, a complex, consisting of a botanical garden, residential villas, smoking hall, wine cellar, monastery, holy spring, chapel and other buildings. One of the largest and most prestigious European film festivals, “In the Palace” is organized by Format SFF Foundation and Community Centre Veshtina in partnership and with the support of Sofia Municipality, Bulgarian Ministry of Culture, Bulgarian National Film Centre, National Palace of Culture, and Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski.”
The festival is focused on contemporary film art in Bulgaria, Europe and the world. It has several sections, including fiction, documentary, animation, and experimental film. Besides short documentary screenings, the festival also boasts seminars, lectures, master classes in directing, cinematography, and other events revolving around contemporary documentary film art, production, and PR.
