August Heat Advisory in Effect for Much of Greece

Current southern Europe weather via the Weather Channel

According to the National Meteorological Service (HNMS) temperatures in Greece will climb to 40 degrees today, with a chance of rain in some parts of the country. A heat advisory is in place for much of Greece.

North winds will serve to cool things a bit, but in the south of the island of Crete, temperatures will top 35 Celsius. High temperatures on Crete are mediated by continuous winds, it should be noted.

Next week meteorologists say temperatures will edge higher in some parts of Greece. As for today and the weekend, in some areas will be “hit” 40s and will remain there at least until and on Monday.

There is a Greece heat advisory in place for much of the mainland, in the west, in Thessaly, and in Central Macedonia (up to 39 to 40 degrees Celsius). The advisory also covers the Greek islands including those in the Ionian Sea, where the thermometer will climb up to 35 to 36 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures are predicted to go lower by 2 degrees or so over the weekend.

The National Observatory of Athens (meteo.gr) calls on citizens and travelers to be alert to the possibility of the spread of fires as the high temperatures dry things out.
