From September 26 to October 4, farms and food producers across the region will open their doors as part of the first Attica Open Farm Days, offering guided tours, tastings, workshops and hands-on activities built around agriculture, food production and local gastronomy.
Organized by the Region of Attica, the initiative gives visitors a chance to meet farmers and producers, see how food and drink are made, and discover a side of Attica that is easy to miss when the region is viewed primarily through Athens.
And there is rather more to Attica than the Acropolis and traffic.
From Olive Mills to Cheese Dairies
The participating businesses cover a surprisingly broad slice of the region’s agricultural economy.
Visitors can explore crop and livestock farms, wineries, olive mills, cheese dairies, flour mills and other food and beverage producers, with activities designed to show both traditional production and modern farming and processing techniques.
Depending on the participating location, the experience may include:
- Guided farm and production tours
- Tastings of local food and drink
- Workshops
- Hands-on agricultural activities
- Demonstrations of production methods
- Meetings with local farmers and producers
For travelers interested in food, this is far more interesting than being told a product is “local.”
You actually get to see where it begins.
A Different Way to Experience Attica
The Region of Attica is presenting the program as part of a broader effort to connect agriculture, gastronomy and tourism, while encouraging more visitors to discover the rural areas surrounding the capital.
Attica Governor Nikos Hardalias said the initiative aims to open farms and production units to the public, particularly children, and showcase a side of the region that grows, produces, processes, and experiments with new ideas.
For children growing up in cities, the distance between a supermarket shelf and a working farm can be surprisingly large. An open farm program shortens that journey considerably.
For tourists, meanwhile, it offers something different: an opportunity to experience Attica’s food where it is produced, rather than only on a restaurant menu.
The Bigger Plan Expands Beyond the Nine Days
The Region says Attica Open Farm Days is intended to go beyond this year’s program.
One longer-term goal is to create a network of farms and food-production businesses that can welcome visitors year-round, helping producers develop agritourism experiences and giving consumers a more direct connection with the people behind local products.
Participating businesses are also being introduced to modern approaches to agritourism, including developing rural experiences and incorporating sustainability into their activities.
That could ultimately be more significant than the festival itself.
A nine-day event can introduce people to farms. A functioning agritourism network can give them a reason to keep visiting them.
From Local Farms to International Markets
The program also sits within a broader regional strategy aimed at strengthening Attica’s primary sector, with an emphasis on peri-urban agriculture, higher-value production, innovation and the development of a recognizable identity for Attica’s products.
The Region says it is also working to help local producers access international markets by connecting agricultural production with gastronomy, tourism and local development.
For producers, that means tourism isn’t simply about getting visitors through the farm gate. It can potentially create additional markets for what they produce.
For visitors, it means getting a little closer to the source.
And for Attica, it is an attempt to remind people that the region isn’t simply the enormous urban area surrounding Athens.
The nine-day initiative culminates on October 3 and 4 with a two-day event at Open Farm Agora, where participating producers will present their products through tastings, workshops and gastronomy activities.
Visitors can find information about participating farms, producers, and individual activities in the official program.
