A trio of Earthquakes shook Crete island early this morning. According to the reports, a 4.0 magnitude event offshore of Zakros was followed by two more events of increasing magnitude.
The first of the tremors occurred at 02:16 38km ESE of Palaikastro. This 4.1 magnitude event was followed by a 4.4 magnitude earthquake slightly closer to the Crete shoreline. Then, at about 03:12 a magnitude 4.7 event took place 29km SE of Palaikastro.
All three Crete earthquakes originated at a relatively shallow depth of 10km. The USGS has not reported any human impact or tsunami warning. These quakes bring the total of events over magnitude 1.5 to 27 in the 365 days.
Seismic activity off Palekastro seems to have increased this year with 3 events over magnitude 4.0 occurring just two months ago. Back in November of 2019, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake hit off the western coast of Crete. That event was felt across most of the island and as far away as the Peloponnese.
