Follow the Argonauts to Amazing Anafi

Mikros Roukounas Beach - Anafi Municipality

For an authentic Aegean experience, the tiny island of Anafi is a relaxing and clam paradise still untouched by the throng of tourists flocking to the Cyclades each year. Located just off world famous Santorini, the island is an iconic shelter from the dizzying outside world.

For those who are not familiar, legend has it that the god Apollo led Jason and his Argonauts to Anafi to shelter them from a horrendous storm by shining light on the island by reflecting rays from his hunting bow. The name Anafi actually means “revelation” – which is as applicable today as in ancient times. The island burned into history by Greek myth, is a picture perfect island paradise for relaxing and calm vacations.

On your approach to the island you’ll immediately fall in love with the capital of Hóra, which looks out over the  Bay of Ayios Nikolaos.  It is here you will find almost all the modern facilities like shops, accommodations, and tavernas. But the real appeal of the island is the natural landscape, the beaches, and the various archeological interests on the island.

Once you settle in Hóra, you’ll want to explore the southern side of Anafi and Roukounas, Agios Nikolaos and Klissidi beaches. There’s also the beautiful Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, the Church of Saint (Agios) Spyridon at the entrance of Chora, and the Monastery of Panagia Kalamiotissa on the southeast side of the island. Here are some suggested activities and attractions you’ll enjoy during your respite on Anafi.
